A genus of annuals and perennials found from southern USA to northern South America, Cosmos belongs to the daisy (Asteraceae) family. Of the 26 species, only 1 perennial and 2 annuals are commonly cultivated. While the annuals are appreciated for their feathery foliage and attractive flowers, the perennials are noted for their range of colors and fragrance. These lovely plants are extremely resilient, and can cope with a range of conditions and a degree of neglect. Appropriately for such a showy and colorful genus, the name comes from the Greek kosmos, meaning beautiful. The young tops of Cosmos sulphureus were used as a vegetable by Native Americans.
